The Factory held a High School Combine on January 8, 2012 to help showcase some of the skills and talents of the local athletes in the area, and the stars came out to shine and stake their claim to the future of football in the southeast!  Participants travelled from as far as Woodland, Alabama and Macon, Georgia to demonstrate their athletic aptitude in the six event Combine that featured nearly forty players!

Leading the way in the January Combine was Northview High School’s Terrance Upshaw.  The Junior Tailback had an outstanding Combine on the heels of being named one of the Top 24 Juniors to Watch in 2012 by the Georgia Public Broadcasting Sports staff and being named to the First Team for All-Region 6-AAAAA.  Upshaw’s teammate, Zach Sullivan, also had a fantastic showing at the January Combine as he looks to establish himself as Northview’s “Go To” receiver this coming Fall.  Sophomore Receivers Caleb Scott (North Gwinnett) and Bailey Vitatoe (Brookwood) showed why they should be getting some good future attention from colleges beginning this fall with performances that are well beyond their years.  And the “SMH” performance of the day came from Brookwood’s 2012 Graduating Senior, Toby Guinn III, who had all Combine spectators and participants wondering why colleges everywhere are not seeking to sign this extremely gifted athlete to a scholarship immediately!

Several other performances of note were turned in by Peachtree Ridge’s Darian Horn Jr. and Aaron Harris, Westside’s (Macon) Jalen Lawrence, Gainesville’s Royal Freeman, Collins Hill’s Gary Richardson, and a bevy of 8th Graders led by Aaron Anderson (Mill Creek), Taylor Stein (Archer), and Kyle LeVell (Marist) who sought to do their very first Combine to gain the knowledge and experience that will help them in their future endeavors to play football in high school and beyond!

We will highlight several of the spectacular performances of The Factory’s January 2012 Combine in this report, but you can see the complete results of the Combine on this site as well.

RISING STARS

These athletes have futures so bright that they have to wear shades:

TERRANCE UPSHAW:  40 Yard Dash – 4.47 seconds, Pro Agility – 4.00 seconds, Vertical Jump – 34.5 inches, Broad Jump – 117.0 inches, L-Cone Drill – 7.19 seconds.  His Combine performance was electrifying!  He will be one of the top players in the entire State of Georgia in 2012!!!  He is an extremely explosive and gifted athlete whose days of playing football will go beyond his senior year of high school.

ZACH SULLIVAN:  40 Yard Dash – 4.48 seconds, Pro Agility – 4.31 seconds, Vertical Jump – 28.5 inches, Broad Jump – 109.0 inches, L-Cone Drill – 7.19 seconds.  At 6’ 2”, 178 lbs., Zach is a good-sized receiver with a perfect frame for adding a few additional pounds to be one of the top receivers in the state!  Good speed and quickness are huge assets to round out the complete package.

CALEB SCOTT:  40 Yard Dash – 4.59 seconds, Pro Agility – 4.27 seconds, Vertical Jump – 29.0 inches, Broad Jump – 111.0 inches, L-Cone Drill – 7.16 seconds.  Amazing Combine debut for the Sophomore receiver out of North Gwinnett High School!  He will have a couple of years to “beef up” his 6’ 1.0”, 162 lb. frame, but he is already going to be a force to reckon with in the Bulldog air attack for Coach Bob Sphire.

BAILEY VITATOE:  40 Yard Dash – 4.66 seconds, Pro Agility – 4.21 seconds, Vertical Jump – 29.0 inches, Broad Jump – 105.5 inches, L-Cone Drill – 7.22 seconds.  The 6’ 4.5” receiver just might convince coach Mark Crews and the traditional Brookwood Broncos running attack to throw the football a little more in the future.  Bailey will need to continue to work on his speed, but showed exceptional quickness for a man of his stature.

DARIAN HORN:  40 Yard Dash – 4.58 seconds, Pro Agility – 4.18 seconds, Vertical Jump – 29.0 inches, Broad Jump – 106.0 inches, L-Cone Drill – 7.37 seconds.  This rising Senior from Peachtree Ridge High School is already being courted by the University of Notre Dame, and his performance in this event showed why!  He is only going to get stronger and faster with his work ethic and training over the next year.

ON THE RISE

These young stars are preparing for their meteoric rise to the top:

AUSTIN ANTWINE:  40 Yard Dash – 4.87 seconds, Pro Agility – 4.38 seconds, Vertical Jump – 27.5 inches, Broad Jump – SCRATCH, L-Cone Drill – 7.51 seconds.  Forced to play and even start Varsity football at Middle Linebacker for Northview High School as a Freshman last year, this Sophomore has had to grow up quickly!  This was his inaugural Combine, and he will be even better with more training and practice

TOHMAS BROOKS:  40 Yard Dash – 4.71 seconds, Pro Agility – 4.35 seconds, Vertical Jump – 29.5 inches, Broad Jump – 102.0 inches, L-Cone Drill – 7.32 seconds.  Only a Freshman, 5’ 11.5”, 172 pound receiver is one good looking prospect for the future of Peachtree Ridge football!  Showed exceptional quickness for such a tall and lean athlete of his young age!

JUSTIN EDWARDS:  40 Yard Dash – 4.88 seconds, Pro Agility – 4.72 seconds, Vertical Jump – 31.5 inches, Broad Jump – 99.0 inches, L-Cone Drill – 7.82 seconds.  Very explosive athlete.  Just a Sophomore, he is going to be a “beast” in the future playing under the tutelage of Defensive Coordinator Matt Hollis at Peachtree Ridge High School.

BRYSON GRAUSS:  40 Yard Dash – 4.88 seconds, Pro Agility – 4.38 seconds, Vertical Jump – 26.0 inches, Broad Jump – 100.0 inches, L-Cone Drill – 7.44 seconds.  This Sophomore from Alpharetta High School demonstrated his explosiveness with a 100 inch broad jump standing at only 5’ 9.5”!  It will be fun watching him grow into what I am sure will be an outstanding football player.

AARON HARRIS:  40 Yard Dash – SCRATCH, Pro Agility – 4.40 seconds, Vertical Jump – 29.0 inches, Broad Jump – 102.0 inches, L-Cone Drill – SCRATCH.  Although he was disappointed with his performance at the Combine, the Sophomore Linebacker from Peachtree Ridge still was able to put up some eye-catching numbers for such a big athlete!  Keep an eye on him for future Combines as his numbers will only get better with the necessary training.

YOUNG GUNS

“Young guns” who are ready to stake their claim in high school football:

AARON ANDERSON:  Good looking and good sized FB/LB coming up in the Mill Creek football program.  Solid build for his positions.  Showed good agility in the Pro Shuttle and the L-Cone Drill.

TREY ALSTON:  Perfect example of how size has nothing to do with ability.  Definitely undersized for any position on the high school football field, but showed good speed, strength and quickness for a man his size!   South Gwinnet will be happy to have him in their program!

CODY CHASTAIN:   Landmark Christian TE/LB who had a solid performance!  Results rivaled some 9th and 10th graders in both this event and past Combines at The Factory.  With steady, hard work should be a top prospect in the coming years!

SEMAJ STARLING:  Coming in at 5’11” and weighing 319 pounds make an instant unforgettable impression for the big man from Mill Creek!   Moves very well for his size although his Combine numbers are not representative due to lack of training!

TAYLOR STEIN:  The big man headed for Archer High School wowed the crowd at the Combine with a spectacular showing in the Bench Press!  A record 38 repetitions of 95 pounds was very impressive!

Johnson, Alabi Shine at 2011 Combine

combine-3

The Factory held its 3rd Annual High School Combine on Sunday, February 13, 2011, and as it has been in years past the athletes showed up to deliver some spectacular performances.  Two of the best overall performances were delivered by Will Johnson, a rising senior at Chattahoochee High School in North Fulton County and Gwinnett County’s own Justin Alabi, a rising senior at North Gwinnett High SchoolJohnson’s performance included a blazing 4.42 second 40-yard dash, an amazing 35.5 inch vertical leap and an incredible 123.0 inch broad jump.  Johnson is sure to be a weapon on both sides of the ball for the State Champion Cougars this coming Fall as they seek to retain their title in the AAAA classification.  Alabi showed why he is deemed as being a “Freak of Nature” by teammates as he posted an unbelievable 4.63 second 40-yard dash, a 7.16 second “L” Cone Drill, and an astonishing 34.5 inch vertical jump with his chiseled 6’ 0”, 197 pound body!  Alabi will undoubtedly be an anchor on the Bulldog defense this upcoming season as North Gwinnett seeks yet another Region Championship in the extremely competitive Region 7-AAAAA.  Both Johnson and Alabi should be high on the recruiting lists and boards of many college recruiters as their talents will be welcomed on the next level.
